| 1 | Musings of a Literary Pilgrim: Generic Variations in Tanizaki Junichirô's Travel Writings from China | |
| | | Author(s) | : | Christopher T. Keaveney |
| | | Abstract | : | This
article explores several pieces of travel writing by Tanizaki Junichir?¥
??¥?§?½C? ( 1886-1965), based on his visits to China in 1918 and 1926. An
analysis of the pieces that resulted from those two trips reveals fundamental
differences in Tanizaki's approach to recording his travel experiences. Whereas
the two essays produced in the wake of the 1918 trip are fairly orthodox
examples of travel writing fitting neatly into traditional Japanese genres, the
essay produced after the 1926 visit is a unique piece which, in its description
of encounters with Chinese writers, constitutes an important record of
Sino-Japanese cultural relations.
